IPTV uses about the same data as any video streaming at the same quality. As a guide: up to about 1 GB an hour in standard definition, up to 3 GB an hour in HD, and up to 7 GB an hour in 4K. Those are Netflix's own published figures, and live TV lands in the same range, though each channel's bitrate is set by the service, so some use more.
Per hour
| Quality | Data per hour (up to) |
|---|---|
| Low / data saver | 0.3 GB |
| Standard definition | 1 GB |
| HD (720p/1080p) | 3 GB |
| 4K (Ultra HD) | 7 GB |
Source: Netflix's data usage guidance (Netflix Help Center). IPTV channels vary: a high-bitrate sports channel can use more than these figures, a low-bitrate news channel less.
Per month
| Viewing | HD | 4K |
|---|---|---|
| 2 hours a day | About 180 GB | About 420 GB |
| 4 hours a day | About 360 GB | About 840 GB |
| Two TVs, 4 hours each | About 720 GB | About 1.7 TB |
Calculated at the upper figures above, over 30 days. If your broadband has a monthly data cap, heavy 4K viewing can reach it.
Things that use data you don't notice
- Players left running. A live channel keeps downloading as long as it's playing, even if the TV is off but the stick is still on.
- Multiview. Four channels on screen use four times the data; see TiviMate multiview.
- Recording. A recording downloads just like watching.
- Guide updates are small by comparison, a few megabytes a day.
How to use less
- Choose HD over 4K for channels where you won't notice the difference (news, talk shows).
- Stop playback when you walk away. Use the stick's sleep settings so it doesn't stream to a switched-off TV.
- On mobile data, pick lower-quality channel versions and turn on your phone's data saver. See IPTV on Android phones or IPTV on iPhone.
- Check your router's usage stats if you're near a cap, to see which device is responsible.
How to check what your TV device uses
- Router app or web page: most routers show data used per device. Check the stick behind the TV over a day.
- Your broadband account: providers with caps show your monthly total.
- Phones and tablets: Android and iOS show data per app in their mobile data settings.
Data caps and fair use
Many broadband plans are unlimited, but some, especially mobile broadband, satellite and some cable plans, have monthly caps or fair-use limits. At four hours of HD a day, a household uses roughly 360 GB a month on TV alone, before anything else. If your plan has a cap, check how close you are before switching from cable to streaming, and consider HD rather than 4K on smaller screens where the difference is hard to see.
Live TV vs on-demand
Live and on-demand streams at the same quality use similar data. The difference is that live channels are easier to leave running: a stick streaming to a switched-off TV all night can use tens of gigabytes. Set your device's sleep timer, or use the player's sleep timer where available.
Does lower quality look much worse?
On a phone or a small bedroom TV, HD versus 4K is hard to tell apart, and even SD can be acceptable for news. On a big living-room TV, HD is the sensible minimum. Choosing quality per screen is the easiest way to save data without noticing.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Leaving streams running to a switched-off TV.
- Watching 4K on small screens.
- Forgetting multiview multiplies data use.
Data vs speed
Data is how much you download in total; speed is how fast. You need enough speed to watch without buffering, and enough data allowance for your monthly viewing. Speed requirements are covered in what internet speed IPTV needs, and buffering fixes in IPTV buffering fixes.
Frequently asked questions
- How much data does IPTV use per hour?
- As a guide, up to about 1 GB an hour in standard definition, up to 3 GB in HD and up to 7 GB in 4K, similar to Netflix's published figures. Actual use depends on each channel's bitrate.
- How much data does IPTV use per month?
- Four hours of HD a day is roughly 360 GB a month. Four hours of 4K a day can pass 800 GB. Several viewers watching at once multiplies that.
- Does IPTV use data when paused?
- Usually a little: players keep buffering for a short time after pausing, and live streams keep loading if the player is on. Close the player when you stop watching.
- Can I watch IPTV on mobile data?
- Yes, but it adds up fast on HD. Choose lower-quality channels where offered, and watch on Wi-Fi if your mobile plan has a cap.
- How much data does an hour of 4K IPTV use?
- Up to about 7 GB, based on Netflix's published figures. Some high-bitrate sports channels can use more.
- Does the TV guide use a lot of data?
- No. Guide updates are small compared with video, typically a few megabytes a day.
- Does IPTV use more data than Netflix?
- At the same quality, similar. Live channels are easier to leave running, which adds up.
- How much data does SD IPTV use?
- Up to about 1 GB an hour, based on Netflix's figures.
- Will 1 TB be enough for IPTV?
- For a household watching a few hours of HD a day, usually yes; heavy 4K viewing can exceed it.
