Quick stepsabout 5 min
- 1
Install VLC from the official site or store. Download VLC from videolan.org on a computer, or install it from your phone's or TV's official app store.
- 2
Open a network stream. On Windows choose Media, Open Network Stream. On a Mac choose File, Open Network. On phones, use the Network or Stream option.
- 3
Paste the M3U link. Paste the full playlist link, including http or https, and press Play or Open.
- 4
Show the channel list. Open the playlist view (View, Playlist on Windows, or the playlist button) to see every channel and double-click one to watch it.
To play an M3U playlist in VLC, open VLC, choose Open Network Stream (Windows) or Open Network (Mac), paste the playlist link and press Play. VLC loads the whole channel list, and you open the playlist view to pick a channel. It takes about two minutes, it's free, and it's the fastest way to check whether a playlist works at all.
Here's how on each device, plus what VLC can't do and how to fix a playlist that won't load.
Before you start: get VLC from the right place
VLC is free, open-source software from the non-profit VideoLAN. Download it only from videolan.org or your device's official store. Fake "VLC" downloads bundled with adware are common on download sites, and the real one never asks for payment.
Windows
- Open VLC and choose Media > Open Network Stream (or press Ctrl + N).
- Paste your M3U or M3U8 link into the network URL box.
- Click Play. VLC starts the first channel.
- Choose View > Playlist (or press Ctrl + L) to see every channel. Double-click one to switch.
If you have the playlist as a file rather than a link, use Media > Open File instead, or drag the file onto the VLC window.
Mac
- Open VLC and choose File > Open Network (or press Cmd + N).
- Paste the link in the URL box and click Open.
- Open the playlist from Window > Playlist (or Cmd + Shift + P) to browse channels.
Android phone, Android TV and Fire TV
VLC is on Google Play and in the Amazon Appstore. Open it, go to the More or Browse section and choose New stream (the label varies slightly by version), paste or type the link, and start it. Typing a long link with a TV remote is painful, so the phone keyboard in the Fire TV or Google TV app helps.
On a TV, VLC works for testing, but a dedicated player is far nicer for everyday watching. On Android TV and Fire TV that's TiviMate: see how to add a playlist to TiviMate.
iPhone and iPad
Install VLC from the App Store, tap Network, then Open Network Stream, paste the link and tap Open Network Stream again. For daily use on Apple devices, UHF or IPTVX give you a proper guide; see IPTV on iPhone.
What VLC does well, and what it doesn't
| Good at | Not built for |
|---|---|
| Testing whether a playlist or channel works | A TV guide (no EPG grid) |
| Playing almost any format, including M3U8 HLS | Xtream Codes logins (it needs an M3U link) |
| Running on nearly every device | Browsing hundreds of channels comfortably |
| Recording a stream to a file (advanced controls) | Catch-up, favourites across devices |
If you want a guide on a computer, Kodi with the free PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on gives you one. We compare computer options in the best IPTV player for Windows and Mac.
Only have Xtream Codes details?
VLC needs an M3U link. Many services give you both. If yours only gave you a server, username and password, it may also offer an M3U link in its customer area. The difference between the two is explained in M3U vs Xtream Codes.
When the playlist won't play
- Nothing loads at all: check the link character by character, including
httpvshttpsand any port number. Then check the account hasn't expired. - The channel list loads but channels fail: those streams are offline, overloaded or blocked. Try several channels. If they all fail, the service is down or blocked on your connection.
- It works on mobile data but not home Wi-Fi: your internet provider may be blocking the server. Courts in several countries order that for unlicensed services; see Is IPTV legal?
- Video stutters: that's your connection or the server, not VLC. Our buffering guide helps find which.
A useful rule: if a playlist fails in VLC, it'll fail in every player. VLC is the neutral test, which is exactly why it's worth having installed.
Frequently asked questions
- Can VLC play M3U8 files?
- Yes. VLC plays both M3U and M3U8 playlists, and M3U8 HLS streams, as links or as files saved on your device.
- Does VLC show a TV guide for IPTV?
- No. VLC shows the channel list but has no EPG grid. For a TV guide on a computer, use Kodi with the PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on, or a dedicated player like TiviMate on Android TV.
- Why won't my M3U playlist play in VLC?
- Usually the link is wrong, the account has expired, or the server is down. If VLC shows the channel list but individual channels fail, those streams are offline or blocked. If nothing loads at all, check the link and the account.
- Is VLC free and safe?
- Yes, it's free, open-source software from the VideoLAN non-profit. Download it only from videolan.org or your device's official app store, since fake VLC downloads with adware exist.
