You can watch hundreds of live channels on a Firestick for free, legally, without any subscription. Start with what's already built in: the Live tab and Amazon's free Fire TV Channels app. Then add three free apps from the Amazon Appstore: Pluto TV, Tubi and The Roku Channel. For local stations, add an antenna. No sideloading, no download codes, no playlists.
Step 1: Use what's already on your Fire TV
The Live tab and Live Guide
On the Fire TV home screen, look for Live in the top menu, or the Live Guide button with a small TV icon. It's a channel guide that pulls together live channels from free services and any paid apps you've installed, so you can browse channels like a cable box rather than opening one app at a time. You can add channels you like to the Live tab so they're one click from the home screen.
Fire TV Channels
Amazon's own free app aggregates hundreds of free ad-supported channels, covering news, sport highlights, cooking, travel and music. It needs no account beyond the Amazon one your Fire TV already uses. Find it under Your Apps & Channels, the Free section of the home screen, or just say "Alexa, play Fire TV Channels".
Prime Video's free section
Amazon closed Freevee in 2025 and moved its free, ad-supported shows, films and channels into the Prime Video app. You don't need a Prime membership to watch them. Look for the free content rows in Prime Video.
Step 2: Install the best free apps
All of these are in the Amazon Appstore. Search by name and install.
| App | Why install it |
|---|---|
| Pluto TV | The most cable-like guide, hundreds of channels, no account |
| Tubi | Huge on-demand library plus local news channels |
| The Roku Channel | Hundreds of live channels and films; you don't need a Roku |
| Plex | A large free live TV service in many countries |
| Xumo Play | Quick, no-signup channels |
The Roku Channel on Fire TV surprises people, but Roku officially brought it to Fire TV devices a few years ago (AFTVnews), and it works like any other app. Our round-up of the best free live TV apps covers what each is best at, and our Pluto TV guide explains how to get the most out of the one we'd install first.
Step 3: Set up the guide so it feels like TV
- Open each app once after installing. Some only appear in the Live guide after they've been opened.
- Favourite channels in the Live guide or in each app, so you're not scrolling past hundreds you'll never watch.
- Pin the apps you use most to the front of Your Apps & Channels: highlight the app, press the menu button (three lines) and choose Move.
- Turn on data monitoring or check your broadband cap if you have one. Hours of HD streaming add up.
Step 4: Add local channels with an antenna
Free apps don't carry your full local ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX and PBS stations. An antenna does, free, in most of the US.
- Fire TV smart TVs (Insignia, Toshiba, Amazon Omni and others) have a built-in tuner. Connect an antenna, run a channel scan in the TV's settings, and antenna channels appear in the Live guide next to streaming channels.
- Fire TV sticks have no tuner, but a network tuner such as an HDHomeRun connects the antenna to your router and streams channels to its app on the stick.
The FCC's reception maps show which stations reach your address (FCC DTV reception maps). Full walkthrough in how to watch local channels free.
If you have a Fire TV Stick 4K Select or the 2026 Stick HD
These newer sticks run Amazon's Vega OS, which has a smaller app catalogue than older Fire TVs. The Live tab and Amazon's own services are there, but search the Appstore for each free app before assuming it's available. Details in our Vega OS guide.
What to avoid
You'll see videos promising "every channel free on Firestick" with a Downloader code. Those are unlicensed services or modified apps, not free TV. At best they break within weeks. At worst they put malware on a device that sits on your home network, which is why we wrote Is IPTV safe? Everything in this guide installs from the Amazon Appstore, which is the simplest test of whether a free service is legitimate.
If you do have a paid service with a playlist or login, our Firestick IPTV setup guide covers that side.
Frequently asked questions
- How do I get free live TV on my Firestick?
- Open the Live tab or Live Guide on the Fire TV home screen, install Amazon's free Fire TV Channels app, and add free apps like Pluto TV, Tubi and The Roku Channel from the Appstore. All are legal and need no subscription.
- Is free live TV on Firestick legal?
- Yes, as long as it comes from apps in the Amazon Appstore such as Fire TV Channels, Pluto TV, Tubi, The Roku Channel, Plex or Xumo Play. They're licensed and paid for by adverts.
- Can I get local channels free on a Firestick?
- Not the full local stations through free apps. For those you need an antenna. Fire TV smart TVs have a built-in tuner, and Fire TV sticks can show antenna channels through a network tuner such as an HDHomeRun.
- Do I need Amazon Prime for free TV on Fire TV?
- No. Fire TV Channels, the free apps and the ad-supported shows that used to be on Freevee (now inside Prime Video) are watchable without a Prime membership.
