For most people a Fire TV Stick 4K Max or a Google TV device is enough for IPTV. A dedicated box (Nvidia Shield, a Formuler, a good Google TV box) is better if you have a big playlist, record a lot or want a wired connection. The more important decision is which brand: unbranded Android TV boxes are where the real risks are, including malware installed at the factory.

The boxes worth knowing

Google TV and Android TV boxes (certified)

The simplest upgrade from a stick. TiviMate installs from Google Play, and many boxes have Ethernet. "Certified" matters: certified devices have passed Google's compatibility and security checks and run Google Play Protect. You can check a device's status in the Play Store settings (Google Play help).

Nvidia Shield TV Pro

Old in years but still the enthusiast's favourite: fast, well cooled, Ethernet and USB ports for recording drives, and long software support. Expensive for a streamer, but it's the one heavy TiviMate users tend to settle on. See recording in TiviMate.

Formuler boxes

Formuler makes Android-based boxes designed specifically for IPTV, with their own MyTVOnline app for playlists and Stalker portals. The Z11 Pro Max, for example, pairs 4 GB of RAM and 32 GB of storage with Gigabit Ethernet and Wi-Fi 6 (Formuler). Good hardware, but check the retailer carefully, since these boxes are also sold "pre-loaded" by sellers of unlicensed services.

MAG boxes

Made by Infomir, MAG boxes are Linux-based set-top boxes built around Stalker/MAC portals, which some services use instead of M3U or Xtream logins. They're simple and remote-friendly but less flexible than Android boxes. Useful only if your service specifically uses a portal (Infomir).

The risk: unbranded and "fully loaded" boxes

This is where buying the wrong thing can do real harm. In June 2025 the FBI warned that the BADBOX 2.0 malware had infected more than a million home devices, including streaming boxes, some with the malware installed before they were even sold. Infected devices were used to route criminals' traffic through owners' home internet connections (FBI IC3 alert).

Warning signs:

  • A brand you can't find outside marketplace listings.
  • "Fully loaded", "free channels for life" or "no subscription needed" in the listing.
  • Instructions to disable Google Play Protect.
  • Its own unofficial app store.
  • Specs that seem too good for the price.

A "fully loaded" box is an unlicensed service built into hardware. Beyond the malware risk, it stops working the day that service is shut down. More in Is IPTV safe? and Is IPTV legal?

What about Firesticks?

The Fire TV Stick 4K Max and 4K Plus remain good value and handle IPTV well with TiviMate, especially with Amazon's Ethernet adapter. Two cautions: the Fire TV Stick 4K Select and the 2026 Fire TV Stick HD run Vega OS and can't install TiviMate (see which Fire TV sticks can sideload), and small sticks are more prone to heat and storage problems (IPTV freezing on Firestick).

What specs actually matter for IPTV

SpecWhy it mattersAim for
RAMBig playlists and guides live in memory2 GB minimum, 3 to 4 GB is comfortable
StorageApps, guide data and recordings16 GB or more; USB if you'll record
EthernetSteadier than Wi-Fi for live TVBuilt in, or an adapter option
Wi-FiIf you can't cable itWi-Fi 6 or newer
Video decoding4K, HEVC and newer formatsHEVC support; AV1 is a plus
CertificationSecurity updates, Play Protect, official appsGoogle-certified or a major platform

Spec sheets on unbranded boxes are often inflated, which is one more reason to buy from known brands. Our Ethernet vs Wi-Fi guide explains why the network port matters more than it looks.

Our recommendation

  • Most people: a certified Google TV device from a known brand, or a Fire TV Stick 4K Max.
  • Big playlists, recording, wired connection: Nvidia Shield TV Pro or a good Google TV box with Ethernet.
  • Your service uses a MAC/Stalker portal: a MAG box or a Formuler, bought from a normal retailer.
  • Anyone: never an unbranded "fully loaded" box.

Frequently asked questions

Is an IPTV box better than a Firestick?
A good box is faster, has Ethernet and more storage, and handles big playlists and recording better. A Firestick is cheaper and fine for most people. What matters most is buying a known, certified device rather than an unbranded box.
What is the best IPTV box?
For most people a certified Google TV box running TiviMate. Heavy users like the Nvidia Shield TV Pro. Formuler boxes are built specifically for IPTV with their own MyTVOnline app. MAG boxes suit services that use Stalker portals.
Are Android TV boxes safe?
Certified boxes from known brands are. Some cheap unbranded boxes have shipped with malware pre-installed: in 2025 the FBI warned that the BADBOX 2.0 campaign had infected over a million devices, including streaming boxes.
What is a fully loaded box?
A device sold pre-configured with apps or services that stream paid channels without a licence. It's an unlicensed service bundled with hardware, and it's the kind of device most likely to carry malware or stop working when the service is shut down.
