For IPTV, Google TV is now the easier and safer bet. Players like TiviMate, Sparkle TV, XCIPTV and Kodi install straight from Google Play, no workarounds. Fire TV can run them too, but only by sideloading, and Amazon's newest sticks run Vega OS, which can't install them at all. For mainstream apps and free TV, both platforms are good, and Fire TV sticks are often cheaper on sale.

Hardware compared

Spec figures from AFTVnews's comparison of Android-based streamers (AFTVnews):

DeviceRAMStorageEthernet
Google TV Streamer4 GB32 GBGigabit, built in
onn 4K Pro (Google TV)3 GB32 GB10/100, built in
Fire TV Stick 4K Max (2nd gen)2 GB16 GBOptional adapter
Fire TV Cube (3rd gen)2 GB16 GB10/100, built in

More memory and storage matter for IPTV: big playlists and guides live in memory, and recordings need space. The Google TV options have noticeably more of both.

The Vega OS problem

Amazon's Fire TV Stick 4K Select (2025) and second-generation Fire TV Stick HD (2026) run Vega OS, a Linux-based system that only installs Appstore apps, and Amazon says all future Fire TV Sticks will use it. If IPTV players matter to you, that's the deciding factor. Details: which Fire TV sticks can still sideload.

Free live TV

Google TV has Freeplay built in, expanded in August 2026 to more than 300 live channels and 10,000+ on-demand titles; see Google TV Freeplay explained. Fire TV has Amazon's Fire TV Channels app and a Live tab; see free live TV on Firestick. Pluto TV, Tubi, The Roku Channel and Plex run on both.

Voice assistants and smart homes

Fire TV devices use Alexa, which suits homes with Echo speakers and Alexa-controlled lights. Google TV devices use Google's assistant and fit homes built around Google Home and Nest. Google's TV Streamer also doubles as a smart home hub. For IPTV itself, voice mainly helps with search, so pick the ecosystem you already use.

Casting

Google TV devices have Chromecast built in, so you can cast from phone apps, including some IPTV players like UHF. Fire TV has more limited casting support. If family members often send video from phones to the TV, that's a real advantage for Google TV.

Profiles and kids

Google TV supports separate profiles, including kids' profiles with only approved apps, which keeps IPTV players off children's home screens. Fire TV has parental controls with a PIN. See parental controls.

Price

Fire TV sticks are frequently discounted and usually cheaper. Google TV devices range from budget boxes to Google's own Streamer. For IPTV use, a budget Google TV box often matches a Fire TV Stick 4K Max on price while avoiding sideloading.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Buying a Fire TV Stick 4K Select for IPTV.
  • Buying an uncertified box to save a few dollars.
  • Choosing on price alone without checking Ethernet and storage.

Who should pick which

  • IPTV playlist users: Google TV.
  • Alexa households who only use mainstream apps: Fire TV.
  • Cheapest possible, IPTV included: a Fire TV Stick 4K Plus or 4K Max on sale (not the 4K Select), or a budget Google TV box.
  • Heavy use and recording: Google TV Streamer or Nvidia Shield; see Nvidia Shield vs Firestick.

Setup guides: IPTV on Google TV and IPTV on Firestick. Whatever you buy, get a certified device from a known brand; see IPTV box vs Firestick.

Frequently asked questions

Is Google TV better than Fire TV?
For IPTV players, yes: Google TV runs TiviMate, Sparkle, XCIPTV and Kodi straight from Google Play. Fire TV needs sideloading on Fire OS models and can't install them at all on Vega OS sticks. For mainstream apps, both are good.
Is Google TV the same as Android TV?
Google TV is Google's newer interface on top of Android TV. Both run Android apps from Google Play.
Which has more free channels?
Both have plenty. Google TV has Freeplay built in with over 300 live channels since August 2026; Fire TV has the Fire TV Channels app and a Live tab. Pluto TV, Tubi and others work on both.
Which Google TV device should I buy for IPTV?
A certified device from a known brand. Google's own TV Streamer has 4 GB of RAM, 32 GB of storage and gigabit Ethernet. Budget options like the onn 4K Pro also do the job well.
Can Google TV run Fire TV apps?
Not Amazon's own Fire TV-specific apps, but nearly every major streaming service has a Google TV app on Google Play.
Does Google TV have ads on the home screen?
Some recommendations and promoted content, but generally fewer than Fire TV's home screen.
Can I use TiviMate on both?
Yes: from Google Play on Google TV, and by sideloading on Fire OS devices (not Vega OS).
Which has better free TV?
Both are strong: Freeplay on Google TV, Fire TV Channels on Fire TV, and the major free apps on both.
Is Google TV harder to use?
No. Both are simple; Google TV's home screen is organised around recommendations.

IPTV Box vs Firestick: Which Should You Buy?

Dedicated boxes are faster and have Ethernet; sticks are cheap and simple. And some unbranded boxes come with malware. Here's how to choose safely.
