How to Record IPTV on a Firestick (and Where to Store It)

You can record IPTV on a Firestick, but its small storage and single port make it awkward. Here's how to do it properly, and when a different device is better.

You can record IPTV on a Firestick with a player that records, such as TiviMate Premium or XCIPTV. The hard part isn't the app, it's storage: a Fire TV Stick has very little free space and only one port, used for power. For occasional short recordings, internal storage works. For regular recording, point the app at a network folder on a computer or NAS, or use a device with a USB port.

What you need

  • A Fire OS stick (not a Vega OS model, which can't install these players; see our Vega OS guide).
  • A player that records: TiviMate (Premium) or XCIPTV (free, per its store listing).
  • Somewhere to save recordings.
  • A spare connection on your IPTV login.

Storage options on a Fire TV

OptionWorks?Notes
Internal storageFor short, occasional recordingsA few GB free at best; an HD hour can be 1 to 3 GB
USB drive via OTG adapterSometimesShares the single power port; can be unreliable
Network folder (NAS or PC)Yes, best optionPlenty of space; use a wired connection where possible
Fire TV Cube USB portYesThe Cube has a USB-A port, making drives straightforward

Fire TV stick specs, including storage, are compared in AFTVnews's device table (AFTVnews).

Recording with TiviMate

  1. Get Premium; on Fire TV it's bought through the TiviMate Companion app. See is TiviMate Premium worth it?
  2. In TiviMate's recording settings, choose where recordings are saved.
  3. In the guide, highlight a programme, open its options and choose record. For what's on now, start recording from the player.
  4. Add a few minutes of padding before and after, since live programmes overrun.

Recording with XCIPTV

XCIPTV's listing describes scheduled recording to internal or external storage, including from the guide, in its free app. See our XCIPTV guide.

Why recordings fail on Firesticks

  1. Storage full. The most common cause. Check free space before scheduling.
  2. No free connection. A recording is a stream; if someone's watching on another device and your login allows one stream, the recording fails.
  3. The stick slept or lost power. It must be on at recording time.
  4. Wi-Fi drop-outs writing to a network folder. Ethernet helps.

Setting up a network folder

A network folder is a shared folder on a computer or NAS that the Fire TV can write to. In outline: create a shared folder on the computer or NAS, note its network path and a username with write access, then add it as the recording location in your player's recording settings. Keep the computer or NAS on at recording times, and connect it by cable to the router for reliable writes.

Using the Fire TV Cube

The Fire TV Cube has a USB port, which makes plugging in a drive straightforward compared with a stick. If you're on Fire TV and want to record regularly without a NAS, it's the most practical Amazon device. Check it's a Fire OS model before buying; see the Vega OS guide.

Keeping the Fire TV awake

Fire TV devices go to sleep after a period of inactivity. Scheduled recordings in some players keep the device awake, but if recordings fail overnight, check the device's sleep settings and make sure it isn't on a switched-off power strip.

Common mistakes to avoid

  • Recording to internal storage.
  • Scheduling overlapping recordings on a one-connection login.
  • Letting the stick sleep or lose power.

When a stick isn't the right tool

If recording matters to you, an Nvidia Shield TV Pro or Google TV box with a USB port records far more reliably, and a Jellyfin server can record for every TV in the house. See Nvidia Shield vs Firestick and IPTV in Jellyfin. And check your service's terms: licensed services set their own recording rules, and many offer cloud DVR instead.

Frequently asked questions

Can you record IPTV on a Firestick?
Yes, with a player that records, such as TiviMate Premium or XCIPTV. The challenge is storage: sticks have little free space, so a network folder on another device is usually needed for regular recording.
Can I plug a USB drive into a Fire TV Stick?
Only with an OTG adapter that shares the stick's single power port, which can be unreliable and may run short on power. The Fire TV Cube has a USB port, which is easier.
Why did my Firestick recording fail?
Usually no free storage, no free connection on your IPTV login, or the stick went to sleep. Check each of those.
What's the best device for recording IPTV?
An Nvidia Shield TV Pro or a Google TV box with USB, or a home server with Jellyfin. They have the ports, storage options and power that sticks lack.
How much storage does a Fire TV Stick have?
Current models have 8 to 16 GB in total, with only a few gigabytes free after the system and apps, which is why internal recording fills up quickly.
Can I watch recordings on another device?
If you record to a network folder, other devices on your network can usually access the files. Recordings to the stick's internal storage stay on the stick.
Can I record Pluto TV on a Firestick?
No. Pluto TV doesn't offer recording.
Does XCIPTV record on Firestick?
Its listing describes scheduled recording to internal or external storage.
How many recordings can I make at once?
As many as your login's connections allow, minus any you're watching.
