Picture and sound problems in IPTV usually come down to formats, not faults. No sound often means the channel's audio is in a format (such as Dolby Digital) that your device, soundbar or player isn't handling properly. A black screen with sound usually means the video decoder is struggling. A completely black screen can be the stream, or the TV refusing the device's signal over HDMI. Find your symptom below and go straight to its fix.
Find your symptom
| Symptom | Most likely cause | Jump to |
|---|---|---|
| Picture fine, no sound on every channel | Audio output or passthrough settings | Fix A |
| No sound on some channels only | Audio format or wrong audio track | Fix B |
| Sound but black picture | Video decoder or codec | Fix C |
| Everything black, no sound | Stream not starting, or HDMI/HDCP | Fix D |
| Sound and picture out of sync | Audio delay from soundbar or stream | Fix E |
Fix A: No sound on every channel
Start with the obvious (volume, mute, the right TV input, soundbar switched on), then:
- Set the device's audio output to stereo as a test. On Fire TV, go to Settings > Display & Sounds > Audio and set surround sound to stereo. On Android TV and Google TV, look for sound or audio output settings. If sound comes back, the problem was surround-format handling somewhere in the chain.
- Check the player's passthrough setting. Players like TiviMate can either decode audio themselves or pass it untouched to your TV or soundbar (passthrough). If your soundbar or TV can't handle the format being passed through, you get silence. Switch passthrough off.
- Test without the soundbar. Plug the device straight into the TV. If sound works, the issue is between the TV and the soundbar (HDMI ARC settings, or the soundbar's supported formats).
Fix B: No sound on some channels
Channels come with different audio formats, and some carry several audio tracks (different languages, or a stereo and a surround version). Two things to try:
- Switch the audio track. While watching, open the player's options and choose another audio track. Silence is often a track your setup can't play; the next one works.
- Change passthrough or the device's audio output as in Fix A. Dolby Digital (AC-3) and Dolby Digital Plus (E-AC-3) are the formats most often involved (Dolby Digital).
Fix C: Sound but a black picture
- Switch the decoder. In your player's playback settings, switch between hardware and software decoding. Hardware is usually best, but some streams only decode in software, or the other way round.
- Try the HD version of a 4K channel. Older and budget devices can't always decode high-bitrate 4K or HEVC video. If HD works and 4K doesn't, that's your answer.
- Restart the device properly, not just the TV. On Fire TV, hold Select and Play/Pause for five seconds.
- Update the player. Decoder bugs get fixed. If your player no longer gets updates, like IPTV Smarters Pro since its 2026 removal from the stores, switching players may be the fix (details).
Fix D: Completely black, no sound
If other apps work on the same device, the problem is the stream: check other channels, your login and the service. Our guide to retry and playback errors covers login and server problems in any player.
If nothing shows, including menus, it's the connection between device and TV:
- Try another HDMI port and another HDMI cable.
- Remove any HDMI switch or splitter between the device and TV.
- Turn both off, unplug for 30 seconds, and turn on the TV first, then the device.
Many video apps require HDCP, a copy-protection handshake over HDMI (HDCP). Old cables, switches and some ports fail it, which gives a black screen in protected apps while others work.
Fix E: Sound out of sync
Soundbars and AV receivers add processing delay. Look for an audio delay or lip-sync setting on the soundbar, TV or player. If only one channel is out of sync, that stream is the issue and there's little you can do beyond reporting it.
Still stuck?
If the picture freezes rather than going black, see IPTV freezing on Firestick, and for spinning wheels, IPTV buffering fixes. If you're on a player that isn't maintained any more, moving to TiviMate, UHF or IPTVX fixes many of these problems outright; see the best IPTV player for every device.
Frequently asked questions
- Why is there no sound on my IPTV?
- Usually the channel's audio is in a format (such as Dolby Digital) that your device, soundbar or player isn't passing through correctly, or the wrong audio track is selected. Try switching the audio track, setting the device's sound output to stereo, or changing the player's passthrough setting.
- Why is my IPTV a black screen with sound?
- The video isn't being decoded. Try switching the player's decoder between hardware and software, try an HD version of a 4K channel, and restart the device. If only one channel does it, that stream may be broken.
- Why is my IPTV screen completely black?
- Either the stream isn't starting (check other channels and your login) or the TV isn't accepting the device's signal, often an HDMI or HDCP handshake problem. Try another HDMI port and cable and restart both the TV and the device.
- Why does only one IPTV channel have no sound?
- That channel probably uses a different audio format or has several audio tracks. Open the player's audio track menu while watching and pick another track.
