The best IPTV player depends on your device, because each platform has its own app store and its own rules. The short version: TiviMate on Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV; UHF or IPTVX on Apple TV and iPhone; Smart IPTV on Samsung and LG TVs; and VLC or Kodi on a computer.
A lot of "best IPTV player" lists online are out of date, because 2026 was a messy year for these apps. Dozens were pulled from the stores, and lookalike apps moved in to catch people searching for the old names. So before writing this, we checked every app below against the US Google Play Store and Apple App Store on 30 September 2026. If an app is recommended here, it was listed that day.
First, what a player does (and doesn't do)
An IPTV player is an empty shell. It reads a playlist or logs in to a service you already have, then shows you the channels, a TV guide and any on-demand content. It doesn't come with channels, and every reputable player says so in its store listing. TiviMate's Google Play page puts it bluntly: it "is a media player only and does not provide any content."
So a player being in an official store says nothing about the legality of whatever you load into it. If you're not sure what a playlist or a "login" even is, start with what IPTV is and how it works.
Our picks at a glance
| Device | Best pick | Also good | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Fire TV (sideload-capable models) | TiviMate | XCIPTV, VLC | Free, Premium about $10/year |
| Android TV / Google TV | TiviMate | XCIPTV, Kodi | Free, Premium about $10/year |
| Apple TV, iPhone, iPad | UHF | IPTVX, Smarters Player Lite | Free with optional in-app purchases |
| Samsung (Tizen) and LG (webOS) | Smart IPTV | Your TV's own store players | One-time €5.49 per TV after trial |
| Windows, Mac, Linux | VLC | Kodi with PVR IPTV Simple Client | Free |
| Roku | No great option | Casting, or Jellyfin's Roku app | Varies |
Fire TV, Android TV and Google TV: TiviMate
TiviMate is the player most people end up on, and for good reason. It was built for a TV remote rather than a touchscreen, and its channel guide is the closest thing to a cable box you'll find. According to its Play Store listing it supports M3U playlists, Xtream Codes logins and Stalker portals, with a full EPG grid, multiple playlists, favourites, catch-up, recording, parental controls and multiview. It had 5 million+ downloads on Google Play when we checked.
The free version handles the basics. Features like recording, catch-up, multiple playlists and multiview need Premium, which costs roughly $10 a year (bought in the app on Google TV, or through the TiviMate Companion app on devices without Google Play such as Fire TV), with a one-off lifetime option. Prices vary by region, so check tivimate.com before you buy.
Two things to know:
- It's not in the Amazon Appstore. On a Fire TV you install it by sideloading, which only works on some models now. Amazon's new Vega OS sticks, including the Fire TV Stick 4K Select, can't sideload at all. Our Vega OS guide tells you which models can.
- It's Android TV only. The developer says it isn't optimised for phones or tablets, and there's no iPhone, Apple TV, Samsung or LG version.
If you want to see it in action, our guides on adding a playlist to TiviMate and loading its TV guide go screen by screen.
Alternatives on Android: XCIPTV (still on Google Play with 10 million+ downloads when we checked) is free and handles Xtream logins well, though its guide is less polished. VLC plays M3U files but has no proper TV guide. Kodi is free and powerful with the right add-on, but takes more setting up.
Apple TV, iPhone and iPad: UHF or IPTVX
TiviMate doesn't exist on Apple devices, so this is where people go wrong most often. Search the App Store for "TiviMate" and you'll find apps called things like "TvMate Pro" and "TiviMato Player Pro". They're from unrelated developers. Skip them.
UHF is our pick. It reads M3U8 playlists, Xtream logins and Plex, Jellyfin or Emby libraries, has a guide designed for touchscreens as well as the Apple TV remote, and supports catch-up and picture-in-picture. Recording works through a free companion app, UHF Server, that you run on a Mac, Windows or Linux computer at home. The developer says it doesn't lock the essentials behind a paywall. It was rated 4.7 from about 2,500 reviews on the US store when we checked (UHF on the App Store).
IPTVX is the close second, with Xtream, M3U, Plex and network share support, a guide grid, catch-up, AirPlay and Dolby Vision and HDR10 playback (IPTVX on the App Store). It suits people who want a very polished Apple-style interface.
Smarters Player Lite, from the same company as the removed IPTV Smarters Pro, was also still listed. It handles M3U playlists and is simple, but it's the least capable of the three. Note that an app just called "IPTV Smarters" on the store is from a different developer. More on that mess in what happened to IPTV Smarters Pro.

Samsung and LG smart TVs: Smart IPTV
Samsung and LG TVs run their own systems (Tizen and webOS), so Android apps don't work on them. Smart IPTV has been around the longest and is still updated. In July 2026 it released version 3.1.3 for Samsung Tizen 6.5+ TVs (2022 and later models) and LG webOS 3.0+, adding channel and guide search and DRM support (siptv.app).
After a free trial, it costs a one-time €5.49 per TV. You upload your playlist through its website using your TV's MAC address, which feels clunky the first time but works. The developer also warns against copies of its app listed on the Amazon Appstore, so install it from your TV's own store.
The honest alternative: plug a cheap Google TV or Fire TV stick into the TV and use TiviMate. For heavy IPTV use it's a nicer experience than any built-in smart TV app. We compare the options in the best IPTV app for Samsung and LG TVs.
Windows, Mac and Linux: VLC or Kodi
VLC is free, open-source and plays almost anything, including M3U playlists. Open the playlist and you get a channel list you can click through. There's no TV guide grid, so it's best for quick viewing or testing whether a playlist works at all. Download it only from videolan.org.
Kodi with the official PVR IPTV Simple Client add-on gives you a proper live TV section with a guide, and it's free. Setup takes 15 minutes rather than two. Our guide to playing M3U playlists in VLC covers the quick route.
Roku: the awkward one
Roku doesn't allow sideloading, and it closed the old "private channel" loophole years ago. TiviMate and IPTV Smarters aren't in its store. What's left is a handful of IPTV players in the Roku Channel Store, casting from your phone, or running a Jellyfin server at home and watching through Jellyfin's official Roku app. None of these is as good as a $30 Google TV stick. Details in how to watch IPTV on Roku.
How to avoid fake and risky player apps
- Check the developer name. TiviMate on Google Play is published by "Armobsoft FZE". UHF's developer is Short Wavelength Applications. Copycats rely on you not looking.
- Install from the store, not a code. Apart from sideloading TiviMate on a Fire TV from its official site, you shouldn't need download codes or APK sites for any app on this page.
- Be wary of players that arrive full of channels. That's a service dressed up as an app.
- Read the reviews by date. A flood of new five-star reviews on an unknown app is a warning, not a recommendation.
Our verdict
If you're choosing a device and a player together, get an Android TV or Google TV streaming device and use TiviMate. It's the best living-room experience and costs about $10 a year. If you're already on Apple TV, UHF gets you very close. If you're tied to a Samsung or LG TV's built-in apps, Smart IPTV works fine for a one-off €5.49. And if you don't have a service yet, remember there are good free legal options that need no player at all: see the best free live TV apps.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the best IPTV player?
- On Android TV, Google TV and Fire TV, TiviMate. On Apple TV, iPhone and iPad, UHF or IPTVX. On Samsung and LG TVs, Smart IPTV. On a computer, VLC for simple playback or Kodi with the PVR IPTV Simple Client for a full TV guide.
- Do IPTV players come with channels?
- No. A player is empty until you add a playlist or login from a service. Every reputable player says so in its store listing, and any app that arrives full of channels should be treated with suspicion.
- Is TiviMate available on iPhone or Apple TV?
- No. TiviMate is an Android TV app. Apps on the App Store with similar names, such as TvMate Pro or TiviMato, are made by other developers. Use UHF or IPTVX on Apple devices instead.
- What happened to IPTV Smarters Pro?
- It was removed from Google Play and the App Store in early 2026 along with about 35 other IPTV apps, after action by the Indian broadcaster JioStar. The developer's separate Smarters Player Lite app was still on the US App Store when we checked in September 2026.
- Which IPTV player works on Roku?
- Roku doesn't allow sideloading and doesn't carry TiviMate or IPTV Smarters. You're limited to IPTV players in the Roku Channel Store, casting from a phone, or running Jellyfin at home and using its official Roku app.
