When splitting helps
- Slow apps. A 30,000 entry playlist can take minutes to load on a Firestick. Loading only the live channels as their own playlist is often the single biggest speed-up; see IPTV freezing on Firestick.
- Channel limits. Some apps and devices cap how many channels a playlist can have. Split into equal parts under the limit.
- Different screens. Kids' channels on the kids' tablet, sports on the living room TV.
- Plex, Jellyfin and HDHomeRun-style setups that handle live TV better with a short channel list. Our M3U in Plex and Jellyfin guides explain why.
How live and VOD are told apart
Playlists don't label entries as live or on demand, so the splitter looks at the links. Links ending in a video file (.mp4, .mkv, .avi) or with /movie/ or /series/ in the path count as VOD; names with an episode code like S01E05 count as series. Everything else is live TV. It's right for nearly every Xtream-style playlist, but check the result if your provider uses unusual links.
What's kept
Each part is a complete, valid M3U: the #EXTM3U header (including the EPG address), every attribute and extra line, in the original order. Group names become file names, with characters that aren't allowed in file names removed. To trim groups instead of splitting, use the M3U editor; to merge parts back together, the editor does that too.
Questions people ask
- How do I split an M3U file?
- Load it in the splitter, choose By group, Live / movies / series or Every N entries, and download the parts individually or as one zip.
- How do I separate live TV from movies in a playlist?
- Choose Live / movies / series. Entries whose links point to video files or /movie/ and /series/ paths go into the movies and series files; the rest is live TV.
- Will the split playlists still show the EPG?
- Yes. Every part keeps the original header with the EPG address and each channel's tvg-id, so the guide works the same.
- Can I split a playlist into equal parts?
- Yes. Pick Every N entries and set the size, for example 500 channels per file.
- Is the playlist uploaded anywhere?
- Uploaded and pasted files are split in your browser and never sent to us. Loading by URL passes the file through our server once, without storing it.
