TV Size and Viewing Distance Calculator

Set how far you sit from the screen and the calculator gives you the TV size that fits, from comfortable everyday viewing to a cinema-like picture. Or start from your TV's size to get the ideal distance, and see whether 4K makes a visible difference from your seat.

Measure from where your head is when you sit back, not from the sofa's front edge.

How to use it

  1. 1

Choose what you know. Your seating distance, or your TV's screen size.

  2. 2

Move the slider. Measure from your eyes when you sit back.

  3. 3

Read the result. The best size or distance range, and when 4K beats 1080p.

The two standards

Viewing distance advice is really about how much of your field of view the screen fills. Two widely used targets:

  • SMPTE, about 30 degrees: the screen fills a comfortable part of your view. Good for everyday TV, news and sport, and the size most people end up happy with.
  • THX, about 40 degrees: closer to a cinema seat. Best for films and games if you sit centrally.

The calculator gives you both, for a standard 16:9 screen. Between the two is a good range; going a size above the SMPTE number is the most common choice for a living room.

When does 4K matter?

With 20/20 vision you can make out detail down to about one arcminute (1/60 of a degree). Sit further than the distance where a 1080p pixel shrinks below that, and a 4K screen looks no sharper than a 1080p one of the same size. For a 65-inch TV that's around 8.5 feet: closer than that, 4K is visibly crisper; further, the extra resolution is invisible, though 4K TVs often still look better for other reasons like HDR.

That matters for streaming too. A 4K stream needs about 25 Mbps and up to 7 GB an hour, so if you sit far from a mid-size TV, HD saves a lot of bandwidth for no visible loss. Our IPTV speed calculator works out what your connection needs, and poor picture quality on IPTV covers why a stream can look soft even on the right size TV.

Practical tips

  • Mount or place the TV so the middle of the screen is roughly at eye height when seated.
  • Measure from your eyes, not from the sofa's front edge; most people sit back further than they think.
  • In a bright room a bigger screen washes out less than you'd expect; in a dark room, the THX size can feel overwhelming at first.

Questions people ask

What size TV should I get for my room?
Measure from your eyes to where the screen will be. For everyday viewing the SMPTE guideline puts a 65-inch TV at about 8.8 feet; for a cinema feel, THX puts it at about 6.5 feet. The calculator does this for any distance.
How far should I sit from a 65 inch TV?
About 6.5 to 8.8 feet. The closer end feels like a cinema; the further end is relaxed everyday viewing. To see the full benefit of 4K, sit closer than about 8.5 feet.
Is a 75 inch TV too big for my room?
Usually not if you sit 7.5 feet or more away: that's the THX distance for 75 inches, and SMPTE's comfortable distance is about 10 feet. Closer than 7 feet, it will fill more of your view than most people like.
Can you tell the difference between 4K and 1080p?
Only up to a certain distance. With 20/20 vision, 4K looks sharper on a 55-inch TV from closer than about 7 feet, and on a 65-inch from closer than about 8.5 feet. Further back, the extra detail is too fine to see.
Does the calculator work in meters?
Yes. Tick Metric and all distances switch to meters.
